CALL OF THE WILD

manbears-logo-pages111to113Bear Bash turns 18 next month and so it’s time for the bears to come of age!
The ‘Manbears’ crew are furiously working their fur off (I mean seriously it’s falling out people!) to bring you the 18th Installment of their epic May Bank Holiday Event.

18 years ago (1998) saw the birth of the event that brings bears, cubs and all manner of label variation to the heart of Manchester. From early beginnings, born from the old PAWS group that used to meet in the basement of Napoleons (as part of the BCUK group), Bear Bash was the brain child of Seamus McAteer, Gerard Hall, and Chris Blunt.

Inspired by two American Bear Runs Seamus attended back in 1997, the GBBB took it’s home on the first bank holiday weekend in the Summer of 1998, as not to clash with any other major events in the UK. It was the second bear event to ever take place. The only other being Ilam Hall which organised the Mr Bear UK competitions. Small club nights, a canal boat ride, saunas, and an organised meal went into making that the first of many events. The PAWS group continued to organise Bear Bash (and it’s November counterpart the Pre-hiBEARnation – which is another story entirely!) up until 2003, when Manbears took over. Gerard Gudgion, Paul Atherton, Scott Owens and Chris Blunt continued to build on the success and create a strong hold event, developing themes and fun for all involved – from Back to School, to workwear, to the bear Olympics and all the time raising money for charities like the LGF and GHT.

2015 sees The GBBB go back to more social roots and working closely with the bars and clubs in the village. The Registration packs this year have vouchers from a multitude of bars that have offered time and space for the Bears over the weekend. So what’s on, we hear you cry. This is going to be the best birthday EVER with 21 events pack into 4 fantastic fur and fun filled days.
