Nigel Martin Smith, owner of Canal Street’s Queer Bar and the now defunct nightclub Essential / Mancunia has finally broken his silence on the rumours surrounding the venues’ future.
It appears there is now no question that a takeover is in place, marking the end of an era for one of the communities most well known characters.
However, he’s not leaving without a bang, as it appears that ‘Essential’ will open its door for one final big party over Pride weekend. More information for you on that as and when we get it.
Nigel formally announced his plans via his Facebook page on Sunday. Here’s what he had to say…..
“In June 2000 Kylie Minogue opened my club Essential Manchester and it was an instant success. Four years later sister bar Queer opened and both venues have been hugely popular with Manchester’s clubbing elite. As they say all good things come to an end and with my agency & management company taking all my time it’s time to pass the venues on to new owners. Queer now has planning permission for a fab new outdoor area and there us massive demand for the re opening of Essential – watch this space. Time for one last party – we will be holding the mother of all events this Pride at Queer AND Essential before new owners and a new era for Manchester’s Gay Village”.
