On my recent visit to Sydney Mardi Gras I found myself in conversation several times about the UK gay scene and how quickly it’s changed over the past few years.
It’s interesting to hear that some people’s opinion is that it’s had its best and better days. So with those discussions fresh in my jet lagged brain, I’m pretty pleased to see as I sit down to write this page that Gay Manchester still has a shit load going on! It appears that unlike other cities we continue to try and push things forward and do really care as about our Village. With the arrival of Orange Nation’s ON Bar later this spring, I’ve got a feeling things are only going to start getting bigger and better than they are right now! With super brands Orange, Later, Beyond under their belts and not to mention their flagship home, ‘Fire’ nightclub in London, Orange Nation look set to bring something a little extra to Canal Street and Gay Manchester when they land in May. A freshly squeezed juicy new era!
More proof that there’s still the desire for a good old fashioned knees up for the gay boys and girls is the return of Spirit Sundays on Sunday 3rd May. The last event was a sell out, so be sure to grab your tickets for this one ASAP, especially as DJ Thaddeus headlines this time around. Unmissable bank holiday action!
Looking less further ahead, SUB101 have revamped their Friday night line ups from March onwards, with new night RnBey and Recreation both moving in for monthly residencies. Recreation kick off theirs on Friday 20th March with a showgirls themed special to celebrate their 11th Birthday. RnBey move in from Friday 13th March, while The Big Scrum look after the first Friday of the month and Cha Cha Boudoir the last. This month the Cha Cha girls are getting involved in the 6th annual Manchester Rubber weekend with The Gag Ball – A Celebration of Fetish. Certainly not one to miss. The following night at Sub Aftershock will also be getting in on the action with Aftershock Black Party featuring special guest DJ Gordon John. For full listings for the Rubber weekend search and stake them out on Facebook or check out page 18 of this very magazine! The event gets bigger every year and you won’t want to miss out on the biggest parties that weekend.
Easter hits the weekend after that, and although Federation teased a return to Manchester it looks like there may be a longer than expected wait for its permanent return to the city. However Fed fanatics will already know Federation is returning to Leeds for the Made In Leeds Festival on 13th June. So if you need a Fed fix soon, this is probably going to be right up your street.
So with the absence of Federation on Easter Sunday, Recreation will be stealing the show at Sub101 for a kinky special. Tickets are on sale now and DJs Jim Dusty and Gavin Clarke feature on the line up for the night.
That’s your lot for now until next month.
Apart from one final thought though! Can you believe it’s now just six months to go until Manchester Pride! Yep, really!
