Village Voice April 2015 – Polly

In this month’s Village Voice we hand over to a true village stalwart. A man who has worked in many of Canal Street’s most iconic venues, and who has now settled into Bloom Street’s New York New York afternoon slot with his ‘Go Sip with Polly’ brand. Yup, she’s back. Its Polly!

After 13 and a half amazing years at Taurus on Canal Street, it was fantastic  to have a few months off and catch my breath.

So March came, the handbag is dwindling and I’m thinking to myself, “Right queen, you need to get a job, dust yourself down and start all over again.” I’m sure there’s a song there somewhere…!

Out of the blue I got a call from the marvellous Tracey Walsh, so I pop and see her for a Sherry. Well, as you know she doesn’t normally partake in a scoop during the light of day, but I made an exception.

A few South African Chenin Blanc’s later, and the deal was done. My new home was to be at the side bar of the New York New York, days and early doors during the week. To say I was delighted was an understatement. I started as soon as possible and the bar was quickly christened ‘Go, Sip with Polly’ and believe me there is gossip a plenty and lots of slurps to be had.

I’m really happy to be back in the village, especially at this exciting time with lots happening. My old place Taurus is having a massive transformation. Manto, where I worked for Carol and Peter in 1998 through to 2001 is to become ON Bar. And Eden which I launched as Metz for Colin and Foo Foo back in 1994 is also having a facelift. Tea 42 is opening where Mongolian was so it’s all eyes on the village once again.

Everybody has been complaining about the decline of the village so let’s hope these new additions bring new life. Let’s not forget though, that despite these tough times there are venues that have been around for years and years and the New York is ne of them, still going from strength to strength. The place looks fantastic with the club side busy 7 nights a week, with fab cabaret from Peggy Wessex, Lee Starr, Roxy Heart and Penny Crayon. And of course there’s the campest VIP room upstairs available for hire 365 days a year.

Go-sip opens at 1pm (this queen needs a lie in), and the drink prices are very reasonable even if I do say so myself. House wine £8.75, Double Spirits (Smirnoff, Gordon’s, Bacardi etc, no shit) including mixers £3.50. Fosters £3.10. Stella £3.30. Cans from £1.75. Fresh cocktails from £3.75. And loads more.

Free food Friday from 5pm is the campest way to start your weekend. So fill your boots with gossip and complement bites to eat all provided by the glamorous Tracey Walsh.

I would like to thank Tracey, Peter, Ed, Zoe and all the team NEW YORK NEW YORK for making me feel so welcome. Hope to see you all very soon at ‘Go Sip with Polly’. 2015 is going to be a very interesting year!
